The artwork

Front: Hồ Chí Minh at right, white-bearded and in a high-collared jacket, engraved in deep blue against pale green and apricot guilloche. Above, the state title CỘNG HÒA XÃ HỘI CHỦ NGHĨA VIỆT NAM; below it the national arms, the star and cogwheel ringed by rice ears. The value is spelled HAI MƯƠI NGHÌN ĐỒNG and repeated as 20.000 in shaded numerals. Red vertical serial at left, black horizontal at lower right, and a lotus-shaped clear window.

Back: The Japanese Covered Bridge at Hội An — Chùa Cầu — drawn side-on in blue over a warm ochre ground, its tiled roof, timber balustrade and stone arches rising from the creek, with the small shrine pavilion projecting at the right and palms behind. NGÂN HÀNG NHÀ NƯỚC VIỆT NAM runs along the top. The value appears again in words and figures, and the lotus window sits at the left.

In circulation

Part of the polymer series issued from 2003 onward, this 20,000 đồng came into circulation in 2006 in place of the earlier cotton-paper note of the same value. It remains legal tender and in everyday use, the polymer notes having entirely displaced the older paper issues at the higher denominations.
