Front: The Millennium of Russia monument, unveiled in Novgorod in 1862, rises in dark green ink: the crowned figure with cross and orb atop the globe, the ring of statesmen and saints below, the frieze-wrapped granite drum. Behind it stands the Cathedral of St Sophia with its helmet domes. Top left, the Bank of Russia's double-headed eagle; across the top, БИЛЕТ БАНКА РОССИИ, with ПЯТЬ ТЫСЯЧ РУБЛЕЙ below. Serial ЗВ 8545711 twice, red and green.
Back: The walls and towers of the Novgorod Kremlin, the Detinets, seen along the earthen bank above the Volkhov — tiled pitched-roof towers, a run of crenellated brick curtain wall, heavy trees and a flight of steps up to the nearest tower. A small ornamental cartouche reads Новгород. Large 5000 numerals top left, top right and centre right; ПЯТЬ ТЫСЯЧ РУБЛЕЙ across the foot, and the year 1995 at bottom right.
Issued in 1995 as part of the last pre-reform family of Bank of Russia notes, and current until the redenomination of 1 January 1998, when a thousand old roubles became one new one. The same Novgorod scenes carried straight over to the 5-rouble note of the 1997 series.
