The artwork

Front: Three martyrs of the Second World War: Jose Abad Santos, Chief Justice shot for refusing to co-operate with the occupiers; Josefa Llanes Escoda, founder of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines; and Brigadier General Vicente Lim, defender of Bataan. Behind them the national coat of arms, the Bangko Sentral seal, and the Medal of Honor, with the 1998 Centennial of Philippine Independence commemoration running along the lower edge.

Back: Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in the Sulu Sea, named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rendered as a wall of reef life: lionfish, anthias, a ray gliding through the blue, and brain coral in the shallows. Centre stage is a South Sea pearl in its opened shell, Pinctada maxima, the species farmed in Palawan waters. An outline map of the archipelago fills the left field.

In circulation

The New Generation Currency series, introduced in December 2010 to replace the long-running English series design that had carried the same three martyrs since 1991. This example carries the 2015 date. The design remained in issue, later joined by a polymer 1000-piso note bearing the Philippine eagle from 2022.
