The artwork

Front: King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev in the plumed Shah crown, bespectacled, in high-collared uniform — engraved in dark brown against a fine lathe ground. At centre, printed in orange, four-armed Vishnu astride Garuda holding disc and mace, with the promise and the words रूपैयाँ दश across it. "श्री नेपाल राष्ट्र बैंक" heads the note, the bank's circular seal sits at upper right, and the Governor's signature runs beneath the vignette. Devanagari serials at both ends.

Back: A blackbuck group in open sal woodland: a ram with long spiral horns, a doe browsing behind him, a fawn couched in the grass, the trees picked out in ochre and green over brown line-work. Nepal's royal-era arms stand at the right — crossed khukuris, the Himalaya, a Gurkha and a hillman as supporters, the motto ribbon below. Value in Devanagari at left, RUPEES TEN at right.

In circulation

A Birendra-era design, current from the mid-1980s and reprinted through the 1990s with successive Governors' signatures. Notes of this type were superseded when King Gyanendra's portrait appeared on the 10 rupee in the early 2000s, and the royal portrait vanished altogether in 2008, replaced by a Mount Everest design after the monarchy ended.
