The artwork

Front: José María Morelos y Pavón, bare-headed but for the knotted cloth band he always wore, engraved in deep wine-red against pale lilac and buff. To the left, the insurgent seal of his Army of the South — crossed cannons, an eagle on a bridge, the word SUD — above the two signatures for the Junta de Gobierno and the Cajero Principal. Behind it, a block of fine text taken from his call for slavery to be abolished for ever, and the dateline MÉXICO D.F. 13 MAY 2015. A butterfly in shifting gold sits upper left; the clear window at the right carries another, with the denomination in micro-lettering around it.

Back: The aqueduct of Morelia in Michoacán, its stone arches marching off to the right under a domed tower, printed in the same wine-red. Monarch butterflies cross the field in several sizes, one large and pale, others small and outlined, a nod to the colonies that winter in the Michoacán highlands. Upper left, the seal of the Banco de México; below it the old glyph for Mechuacán with its fish. The transparent window and its butterfly show through from the front.

In circulation

The polymer fifty of the type F family, in circulation from the mid-2000s and re-dated through the 2010s — this one 13 May 2015. It was superseded by the type G fifty of 2021, a horizontal-portrait design showing an axolotl and the chinampas of Xochimilco, and has since been steadily withdrawn.
