Front: The Army of the Three Guarantees entering Mexico City on 27 September 1821, engraved after the period print: Iturbide mounted at the centre, crowds and drummers beneath a triumphal arch hung with laurel and eagle. A billowing tricolour fills the field behind, its white band carrying the national arms; at left the regimental seal reading Unión, Religión, Independencia. Legends in Spanish, with the caption running along the lower edge.
Back: The mangrove wetlands of Sian Ka'an in Quintana Roo, printed in soft olive and stone. A Morelet's crocodile lies half-submerged among the reeds, jaws slightly parted, while a heron banks overhead with wings outstretched. Mangrove crowns crowd the foreground; behind, a mosaic of pale interlocking facets suggests light on water. A short Spanish panel names the reserve as a World Heritage site.
A commemorative issue dated 5 October 2021, marking two centuries since the consummation of Mexican independence, and released alongside the standard polymer 20 dated 2018. It remains legal tender, but no further 20-peso note design has followed: Banco de México is handing the denomination over to the coin.
