Front: Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, at right in a plumed songkok-style headdress with the federal star-and-crescent badge, medals across his chest, framed by dense engraved foliage. To the left, "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA" on a ribbon panel, and beneath it "WANG KERTAS INI SAH DIPERLAKUKAN DENGAN NILAI" over the words LIMA RINGGIT set in a rosette. The Gabenor's signature sits below. Serial PD1678991 in red, twice.
Back: Istana Negara, the royal palace in Kuala Lumpur, in fine green line engraving: the domed pavilions at either end, the arcaded central block behind its flagstaff, and mature trees crowding the terraced gardens. The name is engraved beneath. Top left, the Bank Negara Malaysia kijang roundel; top right, "$5" among stylised blossoms. Thomas De La Rue is credited in small capitals at the foot.
One of the "$" denominated notes that carried Malaysia's currency through the 1980s and into the 1990s, alongside the same portrait on every value. It gave way to the redesigned series introduced from 1996, on which the denomination is spelled RM and the palace was dropped from the five.
