The artwork

Front: Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Tuanku Muhammad of Negeri Sembilan, the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, at right in a royal tengkolok set with a star ornament and heavy braided collar. The legend reads "Wang kertas ini sah diperlakukan dengan nilai SATU RINGGIT" above the Governor's signature and the single word GABENOR. Behind it all, a woven songket lattice in dusty pink, with $1 and floral scrollwork along the foot. Serial GU0861333, red down the left edge and black at lower right.

Back: The Tugu Peringatan Negara in Kuala Lumpur, named beneath the vignette — Felix de Weldon's bronze group of seven figures, one raising the national flag, standing on its plinth with the crescent-shaped colonnade and domed pavilions behind and trees crowding in. Top left, a rayed rosette enclosing an animal device; lower right, hibiscus blooms in rose and green beside a blue star medallion. "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA" arches across the top, $1 at the corners.

The third series design, current through the 1980s and into the 1990s as Malaysia's everyday small note, and worn accordingly. It was superseded by the fourth series ringgit of the later 1990s, after which the one-ringgit note was reissued in polymer before returning to paper in the fifth series.
