Front: Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, second President of the Republic of Kenya, in a pinstriped suit with a rose in the buttonhole — the portrait that carried every Kenyan note through the 1980s and early 1990s. To its left the national arms: two lions gripping spears, the Maasai shield and the motto HARAMBEE. Titles run in both languages, BANKI KUU YA KENYA above CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA, with SHILINGI ISHIRINI along the foot and the date 2nd January 1992.
Back: The Moi International Sports Centre at Kasarani, Nairobi, drawn from above so the whole bowl of the stadium and its access ramps fill the field — built for the 1987 All-Africa Games and a favourite motif of the period. Behind it rise the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya; at the left stands a torch on a tall staff. TWENTY SHILLINGS in plain capitals across the top.
The Moi portrait notes replaced the Kenyatta issues from 1980 and ran through dated printings into the mid-1990s, this one from 2nd January 1992. A wholly redesigned series followed later in the decade, and the twenty-shilling note itself was eventually superseded by a coin.
