The artwork

Front: A sasando rote fills the right half — the Rotenese tube zither, its bamboo body strung within a fan of split lontar palm, labelled plainly beneath as SASANDO ROTE. Behind it hang bands of ikat cloth in dark reds and browns. The Garuda arms sit top right beside BANK INDONESIA in a hatched panel; LIMA RIBU RUPIAH and a large 5000 run across the top left, above the 1992 date and the Direksi signatures.

Back: Danau Kelimutu on Flores, drawn from above: the ridged, gullied flanks of the volcano with its crater lakes set in the rim, one red, one turquoise, one black in shadow. Green highland and pale sky behind, BANK INDONESIA above and LIMA RIBU RUPIAH below, with 5000 large at the upper right and again over a rosette at the lower left. Serial number OGS085511 twice.

In circulation

Issued from 1992 as part of Bank Indonesia's cultural series, and printed with later dates through the decade; it stayed in hand through the monetary upheaval of 1997–98. Replaced from 2001 by the blue 5000 rupiah bearing Tuanku Imam Bonjol, and long since demonetised.
