The artwork

Front: A portrait of Raja Sisingamangaraja XII, the last priest-king of the Batak of north Sumatra, named beneath in small capitals and wearing the tall dark headcloth of his rank. To the left, the Garuda Pancasila arms struck as a medallion, the date 1987 with the word DIREKSI, and signatures for Gubernur and Direktur. Woven Batak geometric bands run under the value; the engraver's credit reads A.L. RORING DEL.

Back: The Siti Hinggil of the Kraton at Yogyakarta — the raised audience pavilion of the sultan's palace, drawn head-on with its tiered roof, timber posts and broad flight of steps, framed by heavy trees and a lamp standard to the right. Serial number twice in black, upper right and lower left. A warning line in Indonesian sets out the prison penalty for forging or circulating counterfeit notes; credited SUDIRNO DEL.

In circulation

Dated 1987 and issued that year, this thousand-rupiah note served through the late 1980s until the 1992-dated redesign — again Sisingamangaraja XII, but paired with a Lake Toba view — took over the denomination. Notes of the older design were then withdrawn as the 1992 family filled the tills.
