The artwork

Front: Mahatma Gandhi, from the 1946 portrait taken at the Viceroy's House — the image that replaced the Lion Capital as the face of every Indian note from 1996 onward. To the left, the Reserve Bank seal and the denomination in fifteen official languages.

Back: the Himalaya — the Kangchenjunga massif under snow, one of the few Gandhi-series notes to carry a landscape rather than a monument. The mountains sit above the Saka-era date and the RBI governor's signature.

In circulation

Issued from 1996 and carried on the 1998, 2005, and 2007 journeys — this exact note came home in a money belt from Delhi in 2005. Withdrawn after the 2016–2018 redesign introduced the lavender ₹100.
