Front: Ferenc Rákóczi II, the Transylvanian prince who led the 1703–11 rising against the Habsburgs, in fur kalpag and jewelled dolman — engraved after Ádám Mányoki's portrait, credited at the lower right as "Mányoky Á. pinx". Left, a large 50 in a scalloped rosette; centre, the Hungarian arms beneath a star in a wreath, the Budapest date line, MAGYAR NEMZETI BANK, three signatures and a red serial.
Back: A cavalry melee in a shallow river valley: kuruc horsemen with sabres raised driving into imperial troopers, a fallen horse struggling in the foreground and a body sprawled at the right — the fighting of Rákóczi's war made into a broad, painterly engraving. ÖTVEN FORINT runs on ribbons above and below, with the numeral 50 in a rosette at each end.
The Rákóczi 50 forint first appeared in 1965 and was reprinted with fresh Budapest dates through the 1980s, this one 4 November 1986, with a final 1989 date. It was retired in the early 1990s as the 50 forint coin took over the value and the post-communist arms replaced the star-topped shield.
