Front: José Asunción Silva (1865–1896), the Bogotá poet, in three-quarter view against a field of brown and rust hexagons, his name and dates set small beside the collar. To the left he appears again, full length and seen from behind — hat, overcoat, hands clasped over a walking stick. A puya flower carrying the numeral 5 and a bumblebee fill the pale panel, above the bank's name in Spanish.
Back: A páramo in soft blues and greys: frailejones of several heights climbing towards ridged mountains, a bird gliding high over the range, and a bee at the right marked "abejorro". The caption reads "Páramos de Colombia — Fuentes de agua". Silva's poem "Melancolía" is printed in full beside the Liberty-head seal of the Banco de la República.
Part of the peso family rolled out from 2016, which replaced the long-running 1990s design — itself also fronted by Silva. Dated 26 May 2020, it remains current, circulating alongside the older 5,000 note until that type was withdrawn.
