The artwork

Front: Alfonso López Michelsen, President of Colombia 1974–1978, in heavy spectacles with his mouth open mid-speech, the caption spelled out beside him. To the left the same man stands full length in a suit, hat in hand, and behind him a branch of anón (Annona squamosa) in green. The denomination reads "20 MIL PESOS" and, vertically, "VEINTE MIL PESOS", with two signatures for the Gerente General and Gerente Ejecutiva above the issuer's name.

Back: A woman walks away carrying a great sheaf of caña flecha fibre over her shoulder, the raw material of the sombrero vueltiao; one of the finished hats, with its dark and pale plaited bands, sits in the lower left corner. The centre is given to an aerial map of the Sistema Hidráulico Prehispánico de los Zenúes, the pre-Hispanic canal fields of the San Jorge floodplain, with the seal of the Banco de la República above.

In circulation

Part of the peso family introduced in 2016, this design took over from the long-running Julio Garavito 20,000 of the previous series. It remains legal tender and in everyday use; this piece carries the later date of 27 July 2021, the design itself unchanged since first issue.
