Front: Mao Zedong in later life, three-quarter view above his dates, 毛泽东 1893–1976 — the single portrait carried by every denomination of this series. To the left, 中国人民银行 in bold characters, the national emblem with its five stars and Tiananmen gate, and the value twice: a large numeral 1 and 壹圆 in formal characters, set over an engraved orchid. A red serial, HI24809959, sits at lower left, with fine dots punched through the pale panel.
Back: Three Pools Mirroring the Moon on the West Lake at Hangzhou: the little stone pagoda-lanterns standing out of the water, their round openings cut through the shafts, with the wooded shore and a bridge behind and a sailing boat on the flat water. Above, ZHONGGUO RENMIN YINHANG in Latin letters with the bank's name in Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur and Zhuang. Below, 1 YUAN and the date 1999年 beside a red seal.
Part of the fifth series of the renminbi, launched from 1999 and still the basis of Chinese money today. This 1999-dated one yuan was later joined and largely displaced by a re-dated 2004 version of the same design, and from 2019 by a further updated note. All remain legal tender.
