Front: Two men in profile, cut in fine brown line engraving: a Gaoshan man of Taiwan in a wrapped headcloth, behind him a Manchu man — one of the pairs of ethnic nationalities that run through the whole 1980 jiao series. The issuer's name, 中国人民银行, sits along the top; the value 壹角 fills a lozenge of guilloche to the right, with small numerals 1 in the lower corners. Serial number in red, two letters and eight digits.
Back: Restrained and largely ornamental: the national emblem of the People's Republic — Tiananmen beneath five stars, framed by grain ears and a cogwheel — set in a diamond at the centre, with brown and ochre rosettes either side carrying the figure 1. "ZHONGGUO RENMIN YINHANG" runs across the top, "YI JIAO" at the right, and 1980 below the emblem. Along the foot, the bank's name in Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur and Zhuang.
The dated year is 1980; this 1 jiao note was released in 1988 as part of the fourth series renminbi. When the fourth series was demonetised from 1 May 2019 the 1 jiao and 5 jiao notes were expressly excluded, so it remains legal tender — though coins long ago took over small change in practice.
