Front: Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada's seventh prime minister, engraved facing slightly right with his famous shock of white hair. Above him the Canadian coat of arms; to the right, the Parliament Buildings on their Ottawa ridge with the flag flying. A large ornamental 5 fills the left third, wrapped around the words BANK OF CANADA and BANQUE DU CANADA. Below: CE BILLET A COURS LEGAL / THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER, two signatures, and CINQ·DOLLARS·FIVE. Marked OTTAWA 1986, LAURIER.
Back: A belted kingfisher — martin-pêcheur, named in both languages beneath the vignette — perched on a bare branch above a marshy shoreline, crest raised, dagger bill pointed down at the water. Behind it a low range of hills and a still lake; reeds and grasses run the width of the note. Pale outline letters spelling CANADA fill the upper panel. The serial number appears twice in black along the bottom, with sorting bars at the left.·
The $5 of the Birds of Canada series appeared in 1986, replacing the Scenes of Canada design of 1979. It circulated through the 1990s until the Canadian Journey $5 of 2002, which kept Laurier but turned the back over to children at play on ice. The Birds notes were later withdrawn from circulation.
