Front: The Effigy of the Republic, a classical female head crowned with laurel, modelled on Roman coin portraiture and used across every denomination of the Real. To the left, a large blue-and-purple 5, two tactile dots for the partially sighted and the motto DEUS SEJA LOUVADO. At right, the star-and-laurel rosette above the signatures of the Minister of Finance and the President of the Central Bank, and the serial number lettered A ... A.
Back: A great egret — labelled GARÇA in the engraving — stooping over shallow water among reeds and rushes, part of the wildlife series that gave each Real denomination its own Brazilian animal. The value repeats as CINCO REAIS in a tall vertical panel at the right, with a mirrored 5 alongside, and CASA DA MOEDA DO BRASIL printed small in the lower corner.
The first family of the Real, launched with the currency reform of July 1994 and printed in successive issues through the 2000s. A wholly redesigned second-family 5 reais, larger imagery and stronger security, appeared in 2013; first-family notes have since been steadily withdrawn as they return to the Central Bank.
