Front: The Efígie da República — the allegorical head of the Republic, laurel-crowned and modelled in the Roman manner, a figure Brazil has used on its money and coinage for over a century. Above her, REPÚBLICA FEDERATIVA DO BRASIL; below, BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL with the motto DEUS SEJA LOUVADO. A large green 1 fills the left field, and at right sit the two signatures of the Minister of Finance and the President of the Central Bank.
Back: A hummingbird in flight beside its nest, wings spread and long bill open, feeding two well-grown chicks perched among leaves; the species is named in small capitals as BEIJA-FLOR. The whole vignette is engraved in fine grey-green line work against a pale green and straw underprint, with UM REAL set vertically in a panel down the right-hand side and the mint's credit, Casa da Moeda do Brasil, beneath it.plano's restrained style throughout.
Issued from 1994 with the launch of the real, this was the smallest note of the currency's first family. Printing of the 1 real ceased in the mid-2000s in favour of the 1 real coin, and the higher denominations were later superseded by the second family from 2010; surviving notes remain legal tender.
